2D and 3D ANIMATIONS AND SIMULATIONS

(samples will be posted here soon)

Computer generated models and moving pictures can add a dynamic to your presentations that helps clarify difficult spatial properties and time-sensitive changes. 2D animations are great for showing something changing over a period of time or for lower budget animated sequences demonstrating surgeries, accident reconstructions, or mechanisms of injury. 2D artwork can incorporate basic diagrammatic shapes to keep it clean and simple, or it can mimic 3D images by incorporating detailed drawings of volumetric objects. 3D animations require digital models to be built in a 3D space created by the computer. They are often more labor intensive but can result in nice effects and more versatile motions. The main advantage of 3D animation is in showing an object from multiple angles. If you are not concerned about showing objects from multiple angles, it will probably be more cost-effective to use a 2D animation instead. Virtual reality is among the new technologies that allow the viewer to manipulate digital 3D models on the screen in real-time. They still require the creation of the 3D model, but then they go one step further to import that model into a software package that allows the viewer to interact with the model.

Helpful Recommendations Regarding 2D and 3D Animations
  • Use 2D to show changes over time and basic concepts. This less expensive option can accomplish a broad spectrum of effects in less production time, and it is easy to comprehend by the audience.
  • Use 3D to show views from multiple angles and intricate concepts. This more expensive option is rarely cost effective for animations that don't require full 360 degree views or extremely complex environments.
  • Virtual reality is fun, but it can be ineffective and costly. Still images can show the same detail (many times with even better quality) and you can pre-select stationary angles of view rather than having to try to align the virtual object into the correct position.
